Cloncreen Wind Farm

Cloncreen Windfarm is located in Co. Offaly, Ireland.

With a total of 21 wind turbine generators, is capable of generating over 70MW of energy.
GDG were commissioned to provide detailed geotechnical design services for this project.

The Bord na Móna Cloncreen Wind Farm in Co Offaly is expected to generate renewable energy for the domestic electricity market in Ireland, supplying up to 55,000 homes with power per annum.
GDG is undertaking the geotechnical design of access tracks, crane hardstands, wind turbine generator foundations, a met mast foundation and a substation platform.

The Scope of Work

As lead geotechnical designer, GDG’s scope of work on this project included:

  • Geotechnical design of wind turbine spread foundations
  • Independent design checking of piled foundation solutions
  • Assessment of artesian groundwater conditions
  • Detailed crane hardstanding design on soft ground

  • Access tracks design (founded and floating)
  • Crane hardstand design
  • Specification, inspection and testing plan

GDG worked closely with their client to provide a safe, sustainable and efficient design for this project which is located in a former Bord na Móna peat extraction bog with challenging soft ground and hydrogeological conditions.

Our team provided bespoke tailored services to meet the specific needs of this project including assessment of site won earthworks materials, creation of a groundwater management protocol and optimisation of hardstand designs.
